Canus Lupus

A chance and delightful encounter with this yearling wolf. It was less than 20 yards away and didn't last nearly long enough! Taken using my old Olympus UZ2100 digicam. Probably my favorite camera of all time - just for the luck it brings!

We surprised one another on the trail. I was using my old Olympus UZ2100 - the only camera I know well enough to have gotten this shot.
Well, they say that all domesticated dogs are genetically the same as wolves...so they are related :)

you handled the situation well, not many would have had the presence of mind to both observe and record...

in Misha's case, she often seemed a bit more predatory than most dogs. When she came to live with us, she was mildly curious of the llamas and then when she became more comfortable with her surroundings, she wanted to chase and eat them. Finding a new home for an animal that wants to chase livestock was difficult.

It is a problem when our old friends forget they are pets and begin to think like predators! I think it is the primary reason that wolf hybrids are such a bad idea. Imagine Fido jumping on the table and challenging your "alpha-hood" over your steak dinner.

I think the bigger danger for wolves is when some of these hybrids are "set free to be wild" and they think like a dog vice wolf and then if or when they come into contact with humans again, their actions are taken as wolf behavior--wolves not being shy or evasive... you know the rest...it's bad for all the real wolves.

Yes obviously surprised and submissive. This especially indicates a young animal.

This is an amazing shot. I'm jealous. I'm gonna have to put some coyote shots up on my blog (http://www.faultline.org/place/pinolecreek) today or tomorrow just to compensate for my feelings of inadequacy.
